What is gastroesophageal reflux?

Gastroesophageal reflux is a disorder in which the lower esophageal sphincter (muscular ring located in the lower esophagus) is abnormally relaxed and allows the acidic stomach contents flow back (ascend) into the esophagus. It can also cause heartburn.

Gastroesophageal reflux is a common condition. It is the most common cause of dyspepsia (digestive disorder).

What is esophagitis?

Esophagitis is an inflammation of the mucosa (inner lining) of the esophagus. It is caused by repeated episodes of gastroesophageal reflux.

What are the symptoms of esophagitis caused by gastroesophageal reflux?

* Pain or burning sensation (heartburn) in the upper abdomen or chest. Sometimes extends to the back.

* The acid can reflux into the pharynx (throat) and mouth. It is sour and burning.

* Some patients have some difficulty breathing (asthma-like) and hoarseness. It is because the refluxed fluid irritates the airways and larynx.

* Repeated belching are common.

When gastroesophageal reflux occurs?

Symptoms usually occur after a heavy meal, or with plenty of fat, and after drinking alcohol. Worse with snuff.

Lying down, bending forward or bending, and rising reflux may also occur.

Symptoms of reflux may have no apparent cause. The frequency with which symptoms appear varies. They are not common in most people, sometimes it is not uncommon to have daily or weekly episodes of reflux.
